تهتم وحدة السموم والعلوم الجنائية بالكشف والتعرف على المركبات السامة والمواد المخدرة في البيئة أو في جسم الانسان باستخدام التقنيات الحديثة المتطورة في مجال الكروماتوغرافيا.
وتسعى الوحدة للتقدم العلمي في مجال أبحاث السموم وذلك بنشر أبحاث ذات محتوى يفيد في تحسين حياه الفرد في المجتمع السعودي والكشف عن المواد السامه التي من الممكن أن يتعرض لها الإنسان بطريقة علمية أكاديمية مدروسة، كما تسعى الوحدة إلى تقديم خدمات تشخيصيه في مجال السموم الطبية والجنائية.
