Unit's History

Back

The Tissue Culture Unit was initially organized, in 2002, to create new research programs in King Fahd Medical Research Center that focused on studying human diseases. University Hospital, faculty of medicine, pharmacy, allied medical Science, and science were recruited to the unit in collaboration with their interesting academic departments.
The cell cultures mimic real biological tissues and provide a good model to analyze the interactions and stresses that cells experience in vivo. Liquids can flow round and through the cell cultures, allowing drugs or other chemicals to be delivered and their effects measured. The entire system is transparent, so cells can easily be monitored by using a microscope.

Dr. Faten Khorshid who led the team, believes that cell cultures offer an excellent models in many biomedical areas, ranging from basic cell biology to cell-based drug screening.
As factors that influence cell growth and behaviour, cells in vivo interaction with their environment, encompassing neighboring cells, the extracellular matrix and soluble chemicals as well as mechanical forces exerted on the cells and in vitro drug testing applications.

"The exploration of tissue culture is one of the most exciting scientific undertaking in human  history and it is an important step forward for drug

development and bioengineering"

Dr. Faten Khorshid
